1823 Map of the United States

1823 Map of the United States

Description:

This map shows the extent of the United States in 1823. The existing states are outlined, and the unorganized portions of the Northwest Territory are shown labelled as "Western Territory." Notice that the map isn't up to date, especially that it doesn't include the state of Ohio. This indicates that it might be a copy of an earlier map. Though some of the outlines of the existing states, and especially Ohio, are incorrect, the map gives a good sense of the extent of American territory in the period after the War of 1812. In comparison with earlier and later maps, this source illustrates the imperial expansion of the United States. The map also shows the approximate location of various Indian nations, and their towns.
