Ohio Company Land Grant to Puah Davis

Ohio Company Land Grant to Puah Davis

Description:

Following the Revolutionary War, the United States government paid its veterans with warrants for tracts of land. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 contained provisions for veterans to purchase land northwest of the Ohio River with these warrants. The Ohio Company of Associates, formed by a group of Revolutionary War veterans including Rufus Putnam and Benjamin Tallmadge, wanted to open the Northwest Territory to orderly settlement. The Ohio Company purchased a large section of land in what would become southeastern Ohio, offering shares to veterans and settlers. This land grant conveys to Revolutionary War widow Puah Davis of East Hampton, New York, her share of land in Washington County.
