Treaty with the Delawares, 1778

Description:

The Treaty with the Delawares, also called The Treaty of Fort Pitt, was the first treaty signed by the fledgling United States of America. Most of the American Indian tribes in the Ohio country sided with the British during the American Revolution. The Delaware (Lenape) under the influence of Chief White Eyes (Koquethagechton) favored the Americans. Article VI suggests the possibility of a Delaware led state to join the United States with representation in Congress. Under the terms of the treaty, the parties agree to "perpetual peace," but the peace was short lived. Of the signers, White Eyes died mysteriously while serving as a guide for the Americans, Captain Pipe joined the British, Colonel Brodhead burned the Delaware town at Coshocton, and Colonel Crawford was captured and burned at the stake in retaliation for the massacre at Gnadenhutten.

The work was compiled by Charles J. Kappler, clerk of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and published by the Government Printing Office in 1904. The original Treaty document resides with the U.S National Archives and Records Administration.
