Rufus Putnam Letter to Daughter Betsey

Description:

In this letter Marietta founder Rufus Putnam asks his daughter Elizabeth "Betsey" Putnam (1765-1830) to obey her mother in his absence and reminds her that as the eldest child, more is expected of her.

Putnam starts his letter: "This is the first and it may Be the last time I shall Ever write you a letter." Written during the Revolutionary War, Putnam had been made a colonel in the Continental Army by General Washington and was then chief engineer in charge of the works at New York.
