Primary Source Activities: Runaway Slave Advertisements

Lesson summary:
To analyze the reward posters listed under "Resources" to learn more about primary sources and the experiences of African Americans under slavery.

Lesson:
Students discuss what they think it would be like to live during the time of slavery. After the scene is set, discussion ensued about what students would do if they found a runaway slave. What would they do if they were in need of money for their family, both if they were a white or African American person.

    • Indicator: Grade 5, GLI 3. Describe the experiences of African-Americans under the institution of slavery.
